Primordial levert alweer het zesde volledige album af, wat tevens de tweede plaat is voor Metal Blade. Als we de rest van deze recensie overbodig willen maken, dan kunnen we ons wagen aan een kort statement. Het luidt als volgt: ‘De koningen van de Keltische metal hebben een nieuw product op de markt gebracht, als sterfelijke onderdaan dient u dit nu als de sodemieter aan te schaffen!’ Voor het handjevol ongelovigen en eigenwijze klungels dat nu doorleest, gaan we nog even verder. Het vorige album ‘The Gathering Wilderness’ bevatte naast het geweldige ‘The Coffin Ships’ een aantal goede nummers en een aantal redelijke nummers. ‘To The Nameless Dead’ is in z’n geheel een ijzersterk album, dat heel knap stevige passages afwisselt met langzame, epische stukken. Dit alles uiteraard geheel in de stijl zoals we die van deze Ierse geweldenaren gewend zijn. De productie is op het hele album erg goed, beter dan op de reeds genoemde voorganger. Zanger Alan is in topvorm, zijn stem is van de geweldige opener „Empire Falls” tot aan afsluiter „No Nation On This Earth” uiterst verslavend. Een opvallend gegeven is verder dat er op „Traitors Gate” blastbeats te horen zijn. Het is al een tijdje geleden dat we die van Primordial gehoord hebben! Een dringend koopadvies is voor dit album zeker op zijn plaats.

De ongekroonde koningen van Ierse pagan metal zijn terug met een album vol slepende klaagliederen. En als we de geluiden moeten geloven, heeft Primordial met To The Nameless Dead zijn beste werk tot nu toe afgeleverd. Zo niet één van de sterkste metalplaten van dit jaar. Dat zou dan wel betekenen dat de groep uit Dublin de klasse van voorganger The Gathering Wilderness (2005) heeft overtroffen. Geen eenvoudige opgave. De band was destijds behoorlijk aangegrepen door de vroegtijdige dood van Bathory-frontman Quorthon en dat hoorde je terug in de muziek. Het album ademde een verslagen, weidse sfeer uit die deed denken aan de epische Bathory-mijlplaal Blood Fire Death gemixt met Gaelic folk. De gepijnigde jammerstem van zanger Alan A. Nemtheanga zorgde voor een extra dramatische twist. De nieuwe plaat bevat wat minder droefenis, maar is nog steeds treurig van begin tot eind. Door het gebruik van sterkere riffs, minder lagen en een sfeer die je onderdompelt en meevoert, is het de groep inderdaad gelukt om nog meer overtuiging in het materiaal te stoppen. Het grote verschil met zijn voorganger is wel dat To The Nameless Dead een volle analoge sound heeft meegekregen. Maakt het epische plaatje helemaal af. Die voortekenen klopten dus. FOLK-LOVING BLACK METAL PAGANS MAKE SUITABLY BLEAK RETURN.  

AFTER MULTIPLE label changes and a string of cancelled tours, To The Nameless Dead sees Irish Pagan-metallers Primordial returning from the wilderness after years of uncertainty. Harsher and faster than 2005’s The Gathering Wilderness, the band’s sixth studio outing is a distinctly rough-and-ready offering, pushing their gloomy black metal tendencies into new, ever bleak pastures. The folk-friendly harmonies of Heathen Tribes are utterly stunning, its beauty enhanced by a solely analog recording that lends things a raw, genuine atmosphere throughout. With the shortest of its seven tracks clocking in at over six minutes it’s a long ride, but it’s packed with enough moments of brilliance to make it one worth enduring.

The closing paragraph of my review to Primordial's 2005 release "The Gathering Wilderness" expressed a wish: that this highly underrated extreme metal quintet would finally be provided with the necessary means to present their passionate and emotionally charged music to the world. Well, Metal Blade seems to be the only label in the band's history to have put in so much effort, not only in terms of promotion, but also in providing the band with the ideal environment, allowing the Irish bards to create their unique music - a strategy that has certainly paid off in the form of their new killer release "To The Nameless Dead". 

The main issue facing A.A.Nemtheanga (vocals) and Co was of ensuring that "To The Nameless Dead" would reach, if not surpass, the exceptionally high standards of quality achieved by its predecessor. Though this would certainly be a very difficult, if not impossible, task for any average extreme metal band, Primordial faced the challenge with confidence and the result can only be described as the 'angry newly-born brother' of "The Gathering Wilderness". Yes, even though the long atmospheric interludes and dark Celtic-sounding melodies are still the backbone of each of the eight featured composition, at times, "To The Nameless Dead” celebrates the return of shredding riffs, double-bass drumming and Black Metal growls, all of which were greeted with great satisfaction by the author of this review.  

There is no better way to introduce a killer album than by using a rhythmical up-tempo composition, such as the first track "Empire Falls”. This eight minute Epic provides the listener with a list of the most important selling points of this release: a raw and dynamic sound, passionate vocals, adventurous drumming, a Slayeric-sounding melodic break and a catchy sing-along refrain which is guaranteed to stick in your mind for the weeks/months to come. Alan's vocals are as passionate and dramatic as ever, yet his technique seems to have improved noticeably during these last two years and the same applies to the remaining members of the band. Simon O'Laoghaire's (drums) contribution to the mournful atmosphere of "Gallows Hymn" is essential, creating not only the imposing main military-sounding theme of the song, but also the foundation that enabled Alan's vocals to express the feelings of anguish and anger that this powerful composition wishes to convey.  

Elements from the band's cultural origins are, as always, audible throughout this release, and are especially pronounced in "Heathen Tribes" - a composition whose opening acoustic guitar theme and tribal drumming conjure up images of young Celtic warriors engrossed in their last thoughts on the night before a great battle. Finally, those of you who still cherish albums such as "Imrama" and "Journey's End" for their aggression and dynamism will be blown away by the intensity of "Traitors Gate" - a seven minute collection of blastbeats, shredding guitar riffs and a variety of clean and throaty vocals, the power of which sweep away everything that stands in their way.  

I often wonder what the status of this band would have been had they been offered a real helping hand much earlier in their career, but maybe it is because of all the hardships that they had to suffer in the past that they are now in a position to write such powerful and emotionally draining compositions, such as the ones featured on "To The Nameless Dead". Ladies and Gentlemen, if you think that Primordial reached the peak of their creativity with "The Gathering Wilderness", then you'd better think again. There is a new 'Titan' out there - one that shows no mercy to the nonbelievers, so if you don’t plan on supporting these Irish noisemakers in their latest musical journey, then you’d better beware!

On le sentait venir depuis The Gathering Wilderness , précédent album de Primordial. Le groupe de Dublin devenait énorme, incontournable. Sans être spécialement connu du grand public, une écoute suffisait pour entrer dans l’univers de la formation, et ne plus en ressortir. L’arrivée chez Metal Blade avait d’ailleurs pleinement permit à la formation de propager enfin sa musique à plus grande échelle. Nous voila donc avec To The Nameless Dead, ou comment écrire l’album parfait en huit morceaux. Avec ce qu’il faut d’extrême, de lyrisme, et surtout une identité propre, reconnaissable d’entré avec « Empire Falls », réponse parfaite au « The Golden Spiral » qui ouvrait l’opus précédent. Les morceaux reposent sur des riffs puissants (« Failure Burden »), porté par la voix atypique de A.A. Nemtheanga, entre chant et incantation, comme pouvait le faire l’une des influences du groupe Tom Fisher, dans Celtic Frost. Un chant qui une nouvelle fois est une des réussites de l’album, n’hésitant pas à se muer en chant black pour augmenter l’impact de certaines intonations. Et surtout, Primordial nous offre un album chargé d’émotions (« As Rome Burns »), beau à en pleurer, mettant les émotions de l’auditeur à nue. Les rythmiques, souvent lancinantes, parfois violentes (« Traitors Gate »), ajoutent à ce coté hypnotique et addictif. Primordial réussit surtout à instaurer une ambiance unique, entre chant guerrier et litanie (« Gallows Hymn »). Musicalement, le groupe frôle peut-etre parfois le doom pour ce coté dépressif mais surtout le Pagan metal pour cet attachement à se terre natal, l’Ireland (Heathen Tribes). Oui, To the Nameless Dead est un album sombre, très sombre, mais tellement salvateur qu’il en devient indispensable. S’il ne fallait garder qu’un seul album cette année, ce serait celui là. Le précédent album des Irlandais, The Gathering Wilderness, était déjà remarquable. Si bien que nous pensions que ce groupe avait atteint sa plénitude. En fait, il n’en était rien. Si  le disque était truffé de lumineuses compositions (« The Coffin Ships », « Tragedy Birth ») il souffrait également de quelques  imperfections. Principalement au niveau de la prise de son. Primordial a eu la touche de lucidité pour le reconnaître. Alan Nemtheanga (chant) n’a jamais caché son agacement face au caractère stéréotypé de la production metal actuelle. L’homme la juge trop formatée, et trop dépendante d’une technologie envahissante. C’est pourquoi, à l’heure de mettre ce nouvel album en chantier, le groupe s’est attaché à lui donner une âme, une identité forte. Dés les premières mesures de « Empire Falls », la magie opère. Le son est vraiment énorme. Rien à voir avec les ambiances rugueuses de l’opus précédent. Toutefois, si le son est redoutable, il sait rester fidèle à une certaine tradition. Primordial souhaitait recoller à des ambiances old-school, sans pour autant renier l’efficacité et la modernité. Pari gagné, haut la main. Musicalement parlant, To The Nameless Dead, reste du pur Primordial. Et de la meilleure veine. Toujours ce souffle épique et majestueux. Ces guitares aux accents celtiques. Ces compositions hautes en couleurs. Ces envolées guerrières. Les Irlandais ont également injecté quelques séquences plutôt heavy. Des intermèdes rendus implacables, grâce à la prise de son très pointue de la section rythmique. Alan Nemtheanga avoue avoir très durement travaillé ses parties vocales sur cet album. Ses interventions ne souffrent en effet d’aucune critique. L’homme sait utiliser son timbre si particulier pour donner encore plus de poids à certains titres. Et les fans de la premiere heure retrouverons avec plaisir, des parties de chant plutôt extrêmes (« No Nation On This Earth »). Fidèle à son habitude, Primordial nous offre des compositions assez longues. C’est grâce à cela que le pagan metal épique trouve sa véritable dimension. Les thèmes historiques explorés (la décadence de l’Empire Romain par exemple) demandent un certain espace. Une fois encore, Nemtheanga signe tous les textes. Féru d’Histoire, l’Irlandais semble politiser davantage son discours. Il utilise à l’envie les métaphores  et les symboles forts. La thématique des chansons repose sur le concept de nation. Leur naissance, généralement obtenue par le sang versé, et leur chute, souvent irrémédiable. Une mort généralement causée par l’oubli des valeurs ancestrales (« Where Is The Fighting Man – Am I he ? » questionne Nemtheanga). A quoi aura servi le sacrifice de nos Ancêtres, si leur mémoire est aujourd’hui bafouée ? Cet album est incontestablement un must du genre. Il renferme des moments intenses et irrésistibles (« The Rising Tide », « Heathen Tribes », Gallows Hymn »), ainsi que des hymnes flamboyants (« Empire Falls », « As Rome Burns »). Primordial est une sorte de bastion imprenable. Une formation authentique, qui défend farouchement ses traditions. Un groupe aujourd’hui au sommet de son Art.
